Center for Advanced Education and Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences Clinical Pharmacy Research and Education

Ueda MikikoProfessor

As a hospital pharmacist for 29 years, I was involved in all aspects of pharmacy, including preparation, drug information management, drug administration and medication guidance, as well as drug dispensing. Since 2009, I had been working as the Director of the Department of Pharmacy at Osaka University Dental Hospital, where I had been promoting the appropriate use of medicines and examining the appropriate use of medicines from the perspective of dosing behavior based on my experience in the dental field.
In April 2018, I joined the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where I am engaged in medical pharmacy research, especially based on medical data.

Research theme

Epidemiological studies on the appropriate use of medicines

With the progress of medical research, new drugs are created every day and new ways of using them are developed. This can lead to the risk of side effects due to unknown drug interactions. In addition, the information obtained at the clinical trial stage cannot be directly applied to actual clinical practice in some cases because the target population is limited. Therefore, in order to ensure medical safety, it is necessary to continuously evaluate and optimize the safety and efficacy of drug therapies using real-world data, which are constantly changing.

Research on problems related to medication use in the elderly

With the advent of a super-aging society, polypharmacy has long been seen as a problem. While the reality of the elderly receiving many prescriptions is becoming clearer, the activities of pharmacists in home healthcare are also being highlighted, and the reality of their medication use is gradually becoming clearer. It has been reported that the elderly may have difficulties in taking medication due to functional decline, or may have difficulty in taking medication as instructed by their physicians, and may not take medication even if they intend to. By understanding the problems of medication use by the elderly, solutions from a pharmacological perspective will be discussed.

Research and Study on the Contribution of Pharmacy Technicians to Community Health Care

With the rapid aging of the population, the establishment of community-based comprehensive care systems that provide housing, medical care, nursing care, prevention, and lifestyle support in an integrated manner is being promoted with the aim of enabling people to continue living their own lives until the end of their lives. Pharmacies are expected to play a central role in the community comprehensive care system, taking advantage of their existing roles in the community. The purpose of this report is to clarify the contribution that pharmacies make to community health care and to further expand the professional capabilities of community pharmacy pharmacists.
